For Veterinary Public Health, we means the responsibility in the "production" of human health.
Some definitions:
“Part of public health activities that aims the application of skills, knowledge and professional veterinary resources for the protection and improvement of human health” (WHO - Geneva, 1974);
More recently in 2002, “The sum of the contributions to the physical, mental and social development of people through the knowledge and application of veterinary science".
The Italian concept of SPV is much broader and covers all veterinary activities of public importance. In Italy, unlike most other countries, the Veterinary Public Services are headed by National Health Administration.
Definition of "Italian" of SPV (Marabelli and Mantovani, 1997) actions that the public (consumers) and public administrators expect from Veterinary Medicine (especially by the Veterinary Services public) for the protection of health, economy, environment, coexistence with animals.
Currently, European legislation provides a critical role in the management of the Veterinary Public Health to private Vet Company or Vets Freelance consultan, in food safety and animal health.
